ENVIRONMENT
We, the Te Nikau Team, love the bush, beach and
sea around us and want to protect it as much as possible.
Recycling
Recycling is very important to us. We collect all recyclable plastics and papers separately from the general waste.
We provide containers in every unit so our guests can keep recycables from going to landfills. If you’re not sure what is recyclable please feel free to talk to us.
Worm farms
We not only have worms in the compost, but also we cultivated big Worm-farms in some of our Sewage-tanks.
Please use provided bins for non-organic-waste.
Solar-power
Te Ruru and Rata Lodge have each solar-panels to produce electricity and warm the water for our guests.
We ask our guests to consider the use of lights and other electrical appliances. Please switch off lights if you aren’t in the room or go to sleep.
Wet-back
In our main Lodge Te Ruru we have a wet-back in the fireplace installed to heat the water for our guests, additionally to the solar-panels on the roof.
Compost
All food scraps go to one of our many compost-bins where our worms are really happy to take care of them for us.
Our guests collect their food scraps in provided buckets and we take them to feed our worms. Please pay attention what you put in the compost - worms like most food, but not everything (e.g. meat, bones, fats,…). If you’re not sure, please ask us.
Plastic bags
Troughout the Retreat we do not use plastic bags. In bins where bags are needed we use compostable bags or simply wash the bins out.
